Who are you?
Tim, Luke, Pabs and Phil aka Big Hand
What kind of music do you play?
Disco Ska Pop with a good measure of Rock 'n' Roll and a sprinkling of Latino influence.
What is Ska?
Ska came out of Jamaica in the 1950’s and was the precursor to Reggae. It is a faster version of Reggae and focuses on off beat drums and guitar with simplistic repetitive bass lines. It is very common for Ska music to feature brass instruments such as Trumpets, Trombones and Saxophones. Zorbic Ska gives nods to some of these traditions but is something very different indeed….
Who are your fans?
Everyone is welcome. Just leave prejudice and pretentiousness at the door. Smiles are appreciated but not mandatory, dancing is always allowed and ruckus behavior encouraged as long as no one gets hurt.
What are you about?
The point of Big Hand is to add some relief to a world that is highly corrupt and often a very stressful place to be. We are in no way trying to avoid the many issues that plague our modern day society but have decided that as one race on this planet it is easier to go out and face these issues if you can focus on something positive. We aim to provide the positivity in peoples lives that gives them the strength to battle on when everything else is going to shit.
How did the band start?
To cut a long story short we met via the live music scenes in Edinburgh and West London. There was a point early in 2005 when fate bought us all together in a rehearsal studio. The feelgood energy and quality music that emerged from that meeting left us no choice but to put other things in our lives on hold and focus on taking what had previously been a hobby to the next level.
Why are you called Big Hand?
It's based on an old baltic legend where a man with a big hand was outcast from his village for being a freak. One day the sky caved in and the outcast returned to save the day and held up the sky with his big hand. The essence of the story is that we all have our differences which essentially make us all the same and Big Hand is a symbol of that.
What are your gigs like?
A writhing mess of good feeling and positive energy, a chance to forget all your woes. Expect to leave with a huge grin on your face no matter what and hopefully make some lifelong friends along the way.
Can I copy your music?
We are an independent band without a massive warchest meaning every penny counts. However, we want people to hear our music and jump on the handwagon! So the deal is if you're sharing our music with your mates then encourage them to come to our gigs, buy a Tshirt or other merch and spread the word - that way we'll be able to afford to keep putting our music out there and you'll be able to keep on enjoying it.
